This month our Volunteer Spotlight is focused on Ms. Shawnna Alexander. Shawnna has been volunteering with B & Dee’s for over three years. She has been seen greeting guests at our monthly Lunch Patrol. She has also been seen serving food at our annual Easter and Thanksgiving Celebrations. Shawnna was the MC for “Celebrate You” in 2019 (an annual Baltimore Pride Celebration hosted by B & Dee’s Baltimore Love).
Shawnna is best known, however, for hosting many charity drag shows in the Baltimore region. She hosts an annual holiday fundraiser for B & Dee’s at The Rowan Tree. Shawnna is also an integral part of the annual “12 Days of Christmas” (produced by Hooker & Boys). “12 Days” is a longstanding charitable holiday event in the Mid Atlantic LGBTQ community which benefits local nonprofit organizations. We at B & Dee’s Baltimore Love were honored to be a beneficiary at the December 2019 event. Shawnna also recently hosted a show at Towson University benefitting their Center for Student Diversity.
The impact that Shawnna continues to have on Baltimore has been seen far and wide. The Pride Center of Maryland hosts a monthly clothing drive named in her honor…The Shawnna Alexander “Helping Hands” Clothing Closet. Shawnna was recognized as the 2013 Activist of the Year by Baltimore Pride. In 2012, she was recognized as LGBT Person of the Year by the Washington Blade.
We are grateful to Shawnna Alexander for giving back to Baltimore City. We are even more grateful for the love and care that she brings to the B & Dee’s family. Thank you Shawnna for everything that you do! Together we WILL make a difference!
